In Case of Extinction
A downloadable game for Windows
A Self-Paced Adventure
Explore Rea Laboratories, the mysterious and secretive keepers of technology powerful enough to reshape the world as we know it. Also bad puns.
Take control of their few remaining PEAR BOTs and unravel the mystery, humor, and beauty of Rea Labs. In Case of Extinction is a self-paced exploration/walking simulator with some puzzle elements. Can you complete all 8 Rea Labs tasks and reunite the PEAR BOTs? Can you find a way to reunite Greg with his lost friends!? (Spoiler: No, you cannot. Greg will always be sad.)
NOTE: Currently, activating the last (farthest) panel in the Rea-Production room will play a cheezy sound clip and end the game. Sorry there wasn't time for more fanfare!
Controls
Gameplay is simple - explore using WASD and the mouse, left click to toggle interaction with objects, and mouse wheel or tab to swap between your available PEAR BOTs. Escape pauses the game (screen will freeze while paused).
Pressing buttons causes interactions across the map. Sometimes multiple buttons must be pressed simultaneously by different robots in order to unlock something.
About the Development
My wife and I set out with a goal for this game jam of make something beautiful and testing a new process for iteratively designing and developing levels. I feel like we were pretty successful in our goals, even if gameplay, optimization, and UI suffered more I would have liked. Did we succeed? Tell us below in the comments!
Tools and Assets Used
We used Unreal Engine4, Blender for 3d modeling, Substance Painter for texturing, Affinity Designer, Affinity Photo, and Krita for 2D digital art, and Audacity for sound processing.
Premade assets
- We used a concrete texture from TextureHaven.com that we modified for all the concrete surfaces in the game. If you have used TextureHaven, check them out, their textures are free and high quality.
- We used Substance's Machinery smart material to texture our elevators. Everything else was created for this jam in UE4 or Substance.
- Use used the Montebello font for all text in the game.
- Music is royalty-free from the internet (attributions below).
